
Rachel Kiwanuka –– better known by her stage name Rachel K –– is a multi-talented musician, dancer, TV host, speaker and artist.
Born in 1986 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Ugandan music legend Halima Namakula, Rachel has an innate talent for dancing and singing. When Halima heard her 7-year-old daughter sing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” with impressive pitch, she immediately enrolled Rachel in music school.
By 1997, when Rachel was 11-years-old, they moved to Los Angeles to focus on music as a career. While there, she auditioned for American Idol and recorded several albums, eventually touring with local musicians and Ugandan artists.
Her first single “Every Time” was released under No-End Studios and launched her career as an R&B sensation. Her popularity as a musician continued to grow throughout the U.S. and East Africa, while she was simultaneously building her presence as a television host and presenter. She started out hosting Top 8 Videos in LA and was soon making appearances on mainstream broadcasts.
Rachel moved to Uganda in 2006 and started presenting on Jam Agenda, a popular music show, and also appeared as a judge on Season 3 of Tusker Project Fame. The audiences loved her, and she won best TV personality from the Teeniez Buzz Awards two years in a row.
As one of East Africa’s best dancers, she teaches a class at the Hotel Africana and offers private lessons, specializing in styles from contemporary African to hip hop. She even choreographs every backup dancers’ routine for her mom’s performances.
Rachel K has toured all over East Africa sharing her plethora of talents and passions. She recently opened up for P-Square in Kenya after releasing her debut album, “FUSION.”
